Video: NOLA Hiphop Archive (Kickstarter Campaign)

There is a Kickstarter campaign aimed at supporting a digital archive for New Orleans hip-hop. New Orleans has been amongst the most fertile locations in producing hip-hop talent, including the Cash Money and No Limit movements and rappers ranging from Big Freedia to Jay Electronica.

The NOLA Hiphop Archive was founded in 2012 as an effort to collect, document, and make accessible to the public the oral histories of New Orleans’ influential rappers, producers and DJs who helped to create and popularize hiphop and bounce music traditions in the city and beyond. Founded in 2012 by Tulane graduate student, Holly Hobbs, the Archive currently holds more than 30 videotaped interviews with the city’s hiphop and bounce artists and pioneers.

The Kickstarter initiative will be used to assist in the collection of an additional 30 new videotaped oral histories, to be completed by the end of 2014, as well as the creation of a digital viewing station, housed in the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University. A donation of any amount toward our successful goal will help to further document and provide support and recognition for these important members of our creative community and beyond.

Curren$y’s Jet Life Recordings Signs First Female Artist Mary Gold

Cover art for Sex Hormone’d Druggie & video for "Prayer" below.
Mary Gold's Sex Hormone’d Druggie scheduled for 11.7 release.

Hip Hop centered record labels have been known to incorporate a female voice into the crew in order to add a balance of femininity. Bad Boy had Faith Evans. Murder Inc had Ashanti. Now Jet Life has Mary Gold. After appearing on the collective's Red Eye mixtape released in August, the provocative New Orleans performer has officially signed with the imprint founded by fellow Crescent City native Curren$y.

“Mary….man, she’s just another level,” says Curren$y. “I can’t describe Mary Gold to you, I have to show you Mary Gold.”

On the BitTorrent released Red Eye, the new “First Lady of Jet Life” teamed up with Spitta for the remix to her debut single “Prayer.” The original version of the song featured an erotic black and white video that generated significant indie buzz for the self-described “nudist, cunt and tree hugger.” Gold is currently in the process of completing her first mixtape Sex Hormone’d Druggie as member of the Jet Life roster.

“I first was introduced to Mary thru a link that she tweeted to me,” says Jet Life President and artist manager Mousa Hamden. “One word could describe her – captivating.”

New Single: Truth Universal f/ Rakaa Iriscience (@TheRealRakaa) - "People Get Ready":

When I got this beat from Kev Brown and dropped these 8 bar verses on it, the scheme reminded me of “Worst Comes to Worst” by Dilated. I IMMEDIATELY heard Raaka spitting to this. I reached out, let him hear it, and he was in. I must say, of all the “established” cats I’ve worked with, this is one of the most exceptional performances. This Bro. became a part of this song. I’m both grateful and honored to share this song with both Rakaa and Kev Brown. If you ain’t ready… -TU
