Rick Ross and Elle Varner join "The 2014 Respect My Vote! Campaign"

There has never been a more important time for the Hip Hop community to lead with our voices and with action. Mid-term elections are this November, and we need every American, 18 and older, to participate.

Today, Hip Hop Caucus launches the 2014 Respect My Vote! campaign. Respect My Vote! is the largest and longest running Hip Hop get-out-the-vote campaign. So it is historic today, that I get to announce to you that we have two celebrities, new to the Hip Hop Caucus family, joining us and committing to leading with us to educate and mobilize young people to the polls this year.

The Hip Hop Caucus welcome Rick Ross and Elle Varner as 2014 Respect My Vote! spokespeople.

Check out the press announcement from the Respect My Vote! campaign site.  This will be the fourth consecutive cycle for our award-winning Respect My Vote! campaign. Given the numerous issues that the Hip Hop community faces from barriers to economic and educational opportunity, to climate change, to racial justice, there is not a more important time to encourage participation in elections.

I could not be more excited to launch this election cycle’s ‘Respect My Vote!’ campaign during the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer, when young people organized in Mississippi to register as many African Americans to vote as possible over the summer of 1964. Also significant, however, is that today is the one-year anniversary of the Shelby v. Holder decision, in which the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated a key provision of the Voting Rights Act.

The struggle for equality, including our voting rights, is not over and it continues with us.  Follow Hip Hop Caucus on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to stay updated on the campaign. We are planning big things to bring Respect My Vote! to communities across this country.  For future generations.

Nicki Minaj Calls Out Iggy Azalea at BET Awards

Nicki Minaj made some barbed comments during her acceptance speech for her fifth consecutive win as Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards Sunday night that appeared to be directed toward Iggy Azalea.

After quasi-plugging her upcoming album The Pink Print, Minaj said, "What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is, that when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it." Then she gestured in a way that seemed like she was locking her mouth and mugged at the audience. As the audience cheered, she said, "No, no, no, no, no shade," and smiled at Lil Wayne. The comment about writing her own verses seemed to address rumors that Azalea, who was nominated in the same category as Minaj, employed ghostwriters like T.I., according to Gawker.

Minaj went on to tell a story about Lil Wayne making her perfect her verses in the studio. "I'm still one of the only MCs that's out here spitting metaphors and making you think," she said. "And I really don’t even care if I get my credit or if I don't."

Outside of her biting commentary, Minaj shared that she had a health scare that she did not report to the media. "The other day, literally – I didn't tell anyone this – I really thought I was about to die," she said. "Like I was saying my prayers to die. And I didn't even wanna call the ambulance because I thought, 'Well if I call the ambulance, it's gonna be on TMZ. And I would rather sit there and die...' And it made me realize, 'I don't care what anybody gotta say. I'ma do me.'"

Over the past few months, Minaj has been teasing The Pink Print, releasing a surreal video for the ballady "Pills N Potion" in early June. Although the album does not have an official release date, Minaj said at the award show that it would come out this year.

The award show also featured performances by Pharrell, Usher, Azalea, John Legend and Robin Thicke, who dedicated his new song "Forever Love" to estranged wife Paula Patton. "I miss you and I'm sorry," Thicke said, with the singer displaying a photo of the couple. Jay Z and Beyoncé closed out the show with a video performance of the remix to Beyonce's hit "Partition."

Lil Wayne Releasing 2 Albums This Year

Lil Wayne will release not one, but two solo studio albums this year. So much for those retirement plans.

The New Orleans-bred rapper revealed plans for a second album during his latest Weezy Wednesdays webisode. "This year, not only will I be dropping Tha Carter V, but I'm dropping two albums. Be looking forward to two albums, two albums from me because... I been out the game for a second," he said.

The extra LP became necessary after he realized the amount of material he recorded for Tha Carter V. But it won't stop there. Wayne also plans to release additional projects in 2015. "I went to work on Tha Carter V and I don't stop working, so it was either Tha Carter V gonna be 93 songs, or we're gonna have to figure this out. So what we said was, 'Alright, we're going to drop two albums this year, then we're going to probably end up dropping like seven next year," he said.

In other news, Weezy recently announced plans to head out on tour with Young Money label-mate Drake. The 31-city tour will kick off Aug. 8 and go through Cincinnati, Virginia Beach, Charlotte, Atlanta, Austin and Los Angeles before wrapping up Sept. 27 in Woodlands, Texas—with additional dates to come depending on ticket sales.

No release date has yet been revealed for Tha Carter V or the currently untitled second album.

10 Ways Kanye West Changed Sneakers Forever

You can't deny the impact Kanye West has had on sneaker culture. Even before the release of his Nike Air Yeezys, he was influencing sneakerheads without the help of social media (besides KanyeLive circa 2007-2010, of course). He made us pay attention to the kicks he wore at shows. He made it cool to wear unbranded, obscure international labels. And he even made sneakerheads step up their fashion game. Anything 'Ye did on the footwear front created sparks, and once he partnered with Nike and Louis Vuitton, his influence ignited a wildfire. You can expect nothing less once his collection with adidas is officially revealed. Until that chapter in Kanye's footwear history begins, here are 10 Ways Kanye West Changed Sneakers ForeverCLICK HERE

Sir Mix-a-Lot Takes 'Baby Got Back' Classical With Seattle Symphony

Sir Mix-a-Lot's debut with the Seattle Symphony turned into a giant onstage party as dozens of women from the audience took the rapper up on his invitation to join him for a new orchestral arrangement of "Baby Got Back."

"Something you really should not do, but since tonight is orchestral movements from the hood night, I'm going to leave some of this open if a couple of ladies would like to get up on the stage," Sir Mix told the crowd.

The rapper's appearance at Benaroya hall came about as part of the Seattle Symphony's Sonic Evolution series, which commissions new orchestral work inspired by Seattle's music icons. Gabriel Prokofiev, a London-based composer, DJ and producer (and grandson of the Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev), orchestrated "Baby Got Back" as well as the 1988 track "Posse on Broadway."

"My aim with this new Sir-Mix-A-Lot inspired Orchestral work was to really get inside the musical mind of Sir Mix-A-Lot; to understand how his rhythms, textures, sounds and harmonies worked, and to create a contemporary orchestral composition that was true to the music of Sir-Mix-A-Lot," Prokofiev explained on his blog.

Prokofiev went on to describe how he tried to faithfully recreate Sir Mix-a-Lot's electronic arrangements using an orchestra, which required some unusual techniques as well as customized instruments. These included "an acoustic 'Scratcher' (made by scratching a credit card against a metal guiro), a 'jackdaw' (a friction drum that creates a frog like noise), bunches of bamboo cracking against the sides of drums, and various drums laden with chains and cymbals to create distorted drum and clap effects."

Here's How Much Every NBA Team Is Worth Based On The Clippers' $2 Billion Price Tag

BusinessInsider.com recently took a look at how the sale of Los Angeles Clippers is going to change how pro teams' valuations are calculated based on how out-of-whack the $2 billion price tag was compared to the previously perceived value.

Prior to the proposed Clippers sale to Steve Ballmer, the New York Knicks were considered the most valuable team in the NBA at $1.4 billion, according to Forbes. Meanwhile, the Clippers were considered just the 13th most valuable team with a valuation of $575 million.

The overriding implication is that NBA teams in general are worth a lot more than we thought.
To get a sense of how much teams might be worth, here is each team's most recent valuation as well as the value of the team if raised by the same multiple as the Clippers' sale price, which is 3.48 times bigger.

NBA Franchise Values

Instead of $1.4 billion, the New York Knicks are suddenly worth closer to $5 billion, the Lakers may be worth $4.7 billion, and the average team would be worth $2.2 billion instead of $634 million.
Of course, this is the extreme case and it is quite possible Ballmer overpaid just because he desperately wanted to own a team.

However, there are several reasons to believe the potential value of the franchise is much greater than the current value of $575 million, including a new television contract in the next few years and a current operating income ($15.0 million in 2013) that is actually below average ($23.7 million) despite being in the huge Los Angeles market.

This sale also has the potential to impact franchise values in other sports.
Things really start to look crazy if we consider the value of NFL franchises and if they are actually worth 3.48 times as much as their calculated Forbes.com value.

The Dallas Cowboys might actually be worth $8.0 billion instead of their Forbes.com value of $2.3 billion.
Of course, the Cowboys only play eight home games instead of 41 and they cannot sell their own television rights the way the Clippers can. But if there was open bidding for the Cowboys, $8 billion may not be that far-fetched.

ReemWorks (@reemworks2) - "You Cant Deny" Presented By @Bighomiejcuzz

New heat from ReemWorks out of Newark, New Jersey.

MizGin (@OfficialMizGin) - "Get You Off" Produced By @kamaproducers

International pop sensation MizGin Demircan makes her U.S. debut with the provocative new single, "Get You Off" produced by Kama. I'm in love with her vocals; but more so her story. Growing up in the small town of Bollnäs, Sweden did not afford as many opportunities to express herself as an artist. As in most of society, people have customs, and traditions, often forgetting that art is something liberal that cannot and should not be restrained. MizGin invested fully into everything she could find; including the venue that's probably shaped her most... her mirror. MizGin fought for this very opportunity, fought to mold, and develop her sound driven by a passion she's nurtured for music since childhood. This song was slated for one of the worlds biggest pop stars. Little did the producers know, they were in for a fight! "You wanted someone hungry," she said to them, "Well I'm starving." MizGin set focus on this track, and never left the studio until it was hers. That kind of determination in a new market you simply have to love.
