A man who was shot with his own gun after attempting to rob a Swansea convenience store is expected to appear in court later this week.
Denzell D. Grant, 19, was charged with armed robbery after he allegedly tried to rob Max's One Stop at 1319 N. 17th St. while armed with a small caliber handgun on Oct. 13. The clerk wrestled with Grant over the weapon and Grant was shot in his arm in the struggle, according to Swansea Police Chief Mike Arnold.
Grant was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville and then transferred to an undisclosed hospital in St. Louis. His condition and the extent of his injuries were not revealed.
The clerk suffered a minor injury to his hand, Arnold said.
Grant is a soldier in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, and apparently was visiting in the metro-east at the time of the crime.
